Who is the Premier League's signing of the season
Who is the Premier League's signing of the season
By Jonny Bray
Despite the effects of Covid-19, Premier League clubs spent as big as ever last summer in an attempt to push themselves on to the next level.
Some of those signings have failed, but others have lit up the league.
And with the halfway point of the season approaching quickly, it's time to discuss who could be considered the Premier League's signing of the season.
Conor Gallagher
Conor Gallagher has laid down his claim to be part of the England squad that travels to Qatar next year.
The midfielder is on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea and like Ruben Loftus-Cheek before him, he's excelled in south London.
His pressing game, bravery on the ball and sharpness in front of goal have suited Patrick Vieira's style of play perfectly, and he's been Palace's player of the season so far.
His tally of six goals and three assists reflect that and make him one of the league's most productive players in any position.
Now, the question is if he can break into the Chelsea team upon his return to Stamford Bridge.
But if he can't, or if he wants a new challenge, there's no doubt that Palace and a host of other Premier League sides would welcome the youngster with open arms.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Yes, it's an obvious choice, but the man has seven goals and two assists in 13 league games this year.
It's outrageous really. He has no right to be this good at this point in his career.
People can debate if signing Cristiano Ronaldo was what was best for Manchester United this season. However, you cannot deny that the living legend has delivered on the pitch.
It's a shame that much of the chaos surrounding Ole Gunnar Solskjær's departure has overshadowed such an astounding first half of the season for the 36-year-old.
But with Ralf Rangnick now at the helm and the Red Devils still in the Champions League, the stage is set for the Portuguese forward to star in the second half of the campaign.
Aaron Ramsdale
It's incredible just how far Arsenal's defence has come in such a short space of time.
In two seasons, their record has gone from poor to one of the best in the league, and it looks like they could once again break their clean sheet record from last year.
One of the big reasons for this has been the outstanding form of 23-year-old English goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who came from nowhere to nick the Gunners No.1 jersey from Bernd Leno.
With Arsenal continuing their ascent up the table, it's beginning to look as if Ramsdale could be a permanent fixture in their side for many years to come.
Despite being doubted by many fans and pundits prior to his arrival, he's kept seven clean sheets in 13 appearances. For a youngster who still has so much to learn, that's very impressive.
Even better, he's made very few notable mistakes and played a key role in keeping the Gunners in games in vital moments.
Demarai Gray
Despite playing in a struggling Everton side, Demarai Gray has shown just why the Merseyside club were so keen to bring him back to the country.
The winger has already broken his Premier League goals and assists record for a season, finding the back of the net five times and setting up his teammates twice.
All this for just £1.7 million, a ridiculous bargain considering he was the only shining light in their team during the dismal weekend defeat to Crystal Palace.
If he continues this form, he'll be a vital part of the seemingly inevitable rebuild at Goodison Park.
