Could an Usyk v Canelo fight at cruiserweight ever actually happen?

Image
By Oli Dickson Jefford You’d be hard-pressed to find many boxers better than Oleksandr Usyk or Canelo Alvarez. Late bloomer Usyk has forged a formidable career, winning all 19 of his professional fights to date and dismantling Anthony Joshua in September to claim the WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight world titles. Meanwhile, Alvarez is considered by many to be the best pound-for-pound fighter of his generation, holding a 57-1-2 record and winning world titles across four different weight classes. The Mexican currently holds four belts in the super middleweight division and a future move to light heavyweight is possible, having frequently moved up through divisions during his career. And after that, he could well become a cruiserweight, the weight that Usyk previously fought at before his move to heavyweight. With the two not too far away in terms of weight classifications, many people are hoping to see them clash at cruiserweight. What would need to happen to make it possible? On paper, Alv...

Meanwhile, Anthony Joshua was thoroughly outboxed by Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk in the fight he took in the i...

The Mexican brawler TKO’d his opponent in the 11th round to become the first-ever undisputed super middleweight world champion.  That is a feat that not even the undefeated Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, the only man to beat Canelo, could manage. This victory means Canelo is firmly in the conversation when it comes to discussing who is the greatest super middleweight boxer of all time. After getting Plant out of the ring at the MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the 31-year-old added the scalp of a 17th world champion to his fighting CV. Canelo has won 57 of his 60 fights, two draws accompanying that 2013 loss to Mayweather when he was just 23. Mayweather saw off 22 world champions in his glittering and mega rich career to lay claim to leave most regarding him as the division’s GOAT. Canelo has won four world title bouts...
